Arunma Oteh Again!

Ms Arunma Oteh

Have Nigerians seen the end of suspended Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms Arunma Oteh in office? She attended the meeting of the Economic Management Team at the Presidential Villa last Tuesday and mouths began to wag in the federal civil service. Last month, she was sent on compulsory leave by the Board of Securities and Exchange Commission after a clash with legislator Herman Hembe, on bribery and corruption allegations.

Was Ms Oteh secretly invited to the meeting or did she intentionally attend against the Public Service Rules? Were security officers not at the venue? How did she manage to gain entry easily? Moreover, President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to suspend or sack the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who is enmeshed in a higher level of alleged corruption.

Why should Ms Oteh abide by the Public Service Rules when the President of Nigeria has refused to declare his assets and more or less mocked the constitution on television? She is not a timid person and her latest move showed that political games are played in the corridors of power in order to hoodwink the masses. Ms Oteh is ‘down’ but not out. President Jonathan rudely said, “I don’t give a damn". Why should he give a hoot when the lawmakers have refused to amend the constitution and make asset declaration a mandatory requirement for all political candidates before election?
