Needed: Female Governors in Nigeria

Deputy Governors are mere campaign instruments who are never allowed a say in governance, their opinions are never sought on issues. As a Deputy Governor, nobody seeks your advice much less hearkening to it.

Nigeria needs more women in politics especially at the gubernatorial level. Can the electorate elect first female Nigerian governor(s) on April 26 at the gubernatorial election polls? Senator Gbemisola Saraki is the Kwara State candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria while the Deputy Governor of Plateau State Pauline Tallen is contesting under the Labour Party.

Gbemisola is the sister of the out-going governor of Kwara State Dr Bukola Saraki who recently won a senatorial seat and the Saraki family dominate the political affairs in the state. Gbemisola recently accused the (opposition party) PDP of threatening to publish some of her alleged nude photographs. 'Photoshop' or real body shots?

Plateau State Governor Jonah David Jang reportedly confiscated all the government personnel that were working in Tallen’s office because he wanted her to legally resign before contesting against him. The people of Plateau State will decide who to govern them next week, after all, the state has suffered from deadly religious riots and unlawful killings. Last month, the first lady Dame Patience Jonathan gave money to female candidates at a special dinner.

Through her Women for Change and Development Initiative, she gave out undisclosed amount to five female governorship candidates, 88 women contesting for senatorial seats, 218 House of Representatives and 493 state Houses of Assembly candidates.

There isn’t much to say on the Action Congress of Nigeria candidate Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola in the upcoming gubernatorial election because action speaks louder than words. His previous performance in Lagos State is explicit. Like the Yoruba political slogan Bo te soro, o ti wole! (Even without speaking, you have already 'won' the election.)
Update: Fashola re-elected in Lagos
ACN wins in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Ekiti

Oyo State politics is complex. The masses are suffering yet some of them may still prefer to vote for a governor that does not care about them. A lot of voters used to sell their votes until the recent National Assembly elections. There is usually lack of information on candidates therefore the masses are forced to vote for parties and not individuals; especially in previous State House of Assembly elections.

The time is ripe for the Action Congress of Nigeria gubernatorial candidate Senator Abiola Ajimobi to take over Oyo State because he has more to offer than his rivals. All these years, the government could not tar the roads and 'footpaths' of popular Bodija Market. The state has not had much improvement or development since the era of Governor Bola Ige (1979 – 1983). It is a great shame that is embedded in shambolic governance!

South-South First Lady of ‘Dollars’

We would not like to mention names but a guest TV commentator alleged that the Nigerian Ist lady of a South-South State runs a shop where feminine fashion accessories can only be bought or sold in US Dollars. The guests on the show were 'shocked' and viewers watched with mouths agape.

Such a shop should be closed down with immediate effect. The State Security Service should be aware of such oppressive mode of trade in the state. A state first lady should be a role model and not the 'oppressor' of the state.

  1. Deputy Governors are mere campaign instruments who are never allowed a say in governance, their opinions are never sought on issues. The vice cant call press conferences ?She cant lead or throw a debate ?Again nonsense.

  2. If she wins the gubernatorial election, she would have to allow the deputy governor to do the things she couldn’t do or face the same allegations.
