London Mayor Boris Johnson with 'carnival queens'
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson reportedly said, "Let the true spirit of London shine through." It was the Mayor's plea to participants during the Notting Hill Carnival; to 'heal the wounds caused by the riots'. The two-day carnival which began in 1964 'ended' on August 29.

A man was stabbed. Apart from that mishap, the true spirit of London shone gracefully although the Metropolitan Police made about 245 arrests. There were over 6,500 police officers 'on duty'. Over one million people were expected to attend the event. (Sky News picture gallery)
