The Burial of a Governor’s Father

By Danielle Lobito

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola had to limit his holy visit to Saudi Arabia as soon as he heard the sad news that his father Alhaji Ibrahim Ademola Fashola died after a protracted illness last Monday. He died a few months to his 80th birthday. Governor Fashola said that his father who was buried the next day at Ikoyi Vaults and Garden Cemetery was actually his best friend. Recently, Governor Fashola’s political mentor and predecessor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's mother Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji died at the age of 96.

Thanks to a legal loophole, the average age of marriage for girls in Kebbi State, northern Nigeria, is 11 years old. The law is often manipulated and exploited for perverse ends, but it's rare that one forgotten detail in legislation can affect an entire mass of people quite so profoundly.

Section 29 of the Nigerian constitution allows any Nigerian of full age (18 or above) to renounce his or her citizenship. However, a subsection of that law adds that women can only be deemed of full age when they get married—a convenient loophole that's become easy to exploit by any adult man in the mood to snatch himself up a child bride.

Some Nigerians are 'fighting' 35 Senators on the social media in order to stop the marriage of children to paedophiles in Nigeria. On of such 'fighters' is broadcast journalist Princess‘Deun Adedoyin-Solarin who presents the ‘Princess of Arize’ show on *BEN TV on Saturdays at 10am.

Last week, Princess 'Deun and a panel of commentators on the show were deeply shocked by former Governor cum Senator Sani Yerima led plot to amend a section of the constitution in favour of Paedophiles. A commentator said that two female senators refused to oppose the Yerima et al motion. We are not trying to support the female senators but it must be emphasized that they were more or less powerless.

In the past, Senator Iyabo Anisulowo (Ogun State) received a slap from Senator Isa Mohammed (Niger State). Gbosa!! A lawyer, Senator Daisy Danjuma sponsored a bill to legalize abortion in Nigeria but she was shouted down. It was horrendous as thousands of girls died from 'illegal' and self induced abortion. Nevertheless, it is important to have more female representation in the National Assembly mainly because there are too many men there.

What the female senators should have done was to tender their resignation because they are a disgrace to womanhood. It is better to resign than allow further rape aka marriage of female children in Nigeria. The senators were probably afraid of being attacked by terrorists since child marriage is based on religion or Sharia Law. Moreover, child brides tend to suffer from obstetric fistula after childbirth while these rapists aka husbands do not care.

The British government is trying to stop paedophilia especially on the internet while 35 Nigerian senators aka paedophiles shamelessly prefer to abuse children. The anti-child marriage petitioners could send their petitions to the US and UK governments in order to stop the entry of 35 Nigerian paedophiles into the US and UK. They can even send their petitions to the United Nations Security Council. The 35 Nigerian Senate paedophiles are a danger to children worldwide especially girls. A Senator later claimed that he voted in error. Was he hoodwinked or brainwashed to join the ‘paedophile club’ in the senate? We don’t believe him.

A US based lecturer, novelist, columnist and essayist Professor Okey Nbibe appeared on POLItricks (BEN TV) debate about the state of the nation, Nigeria. Ndibe was not amused when some London based Nigerians mentioned road repair and telecommunications efficiency as some of the achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan. He was disappointed that some Nigerians in London could say such things rather than ‘pin-point’ the flaws of the Presidency.

On government officials who loot the treasury and siphon money to foreign countries, he said that somebody who is in the business of stealing is not in the business of thinking. For daring to write articles against the Federal and some State Governments in Nigeria, Ndibe has been harassed and arrested by the State Security Service during his visits to Nigeria.
