An example of a runaway wife is actress Doris Simeon’s role in the ‘old’ Yoruba film Onitemi (2007). 'Onitemi' is a film by Doris Simeon. Coincidentally, her former husband, film director Daniel Ademinokan plays her husband in the film. It shows how a married woman gets carried way and elopes with an ex-boyfriend that once stylishly dumped her like a sack of rotten potatoes. Kunle Afolayan plays her boyfriend.

A long time ago, my senior friend wanted to elope with her US based ex-boyfriend after failing to let go of old valentine memories. I was so scared and had to talk her out of it. She did not have many friends and it was obvious that her soldier husband would suspect that I knew about it. I was terrified that a lorry full of soldiers could be on my revenge trail a la African style.

Soldiers are powerful. The day soldiers confronted a randy lecturer (aka Mr Lecturer) who kept on failing another friend of mine was a memorable day that a particular university was thrown into commotion in Nigeria. The lecturer sexually harassed her without knowing that she was a soldier’s daughter. Anyway, she graduated that year. Hehehe! How I wished I had known her father when I had problems with a randy Professor who tormented me.

I used to call my senior friend "Iyawo Soja" meaning the soldier’s wife in Yoruba (behind her back) because I could not see what she saw in him apart from the uniform. It is funny now but it was not funny then. Soldiers tend to be more attractive in uniform. Some Nigerian army soldiers tend to marry pretty women and keep strikingly beautiful mistresses. They are usually romantic and most women enjoy falling in love with them.

I told ‘Iyawo Soja’ to think of her children and forget her ex-boyfriend. Several years later, the film 'Onitemi' helped me to understand why ‘Iyawo Soja’ fell back in love with her ex and was ready to runaway at the slightest opportunity. Being a soldier’s wife was a huge responsibility for a young woman like her because he was hardly there when she needed him most. They lived apart most of the time which was due to the fact that he was posted to different states.
