Airtel: ‘Sacked’ Nigerian Employees

A previous Airtel staff protest over unpaid bonuses and allowances

Telecommunications company Airtel now run by Indians has 'sacked' over 3000 of their customer care staff for failing to accept a massive reduction in their salaries.

The Airtel customer care staff were previously being paid 80,000 Naira a month and objected to the reduction of their salaries to 65,000 Naira a month (with no additional incentives).

The House of Representatives has ordered the reinstatement of the 'sacked' Airtel Nigeria 'employees'. What would Airtel Nigeria do after 'denying' the allegations? Airtel says they were not Airtel employees but were 'agency employees' with expired contracts. According to Airtel, 'Airtel DOES NOT employ casual workers in any part of our organization'. Why are the Amazons of 'due process' silent on the matter?

What stops the legislators from enacting employment legislation that would protect employees rights at work? If the current laws cannot protect employees from employers in Nigeria, why would expatriates not 'maltreat' Nigerians, in Nigeria?

It was unnecessary for the Nigerian police to harass and shoot tear gas at protesters in a peaceful demonstration. The National Union of Posts and Telecommunication Employees (NUPTE) secretary, Dele Adegbite accused the ‘police of subverting the course of justice’.

Nevertheless, Abia State Government is planning to sack non-indigenes employed by the state government but employees in tertiary institutions are excluded. Affected employees are also expected to go back to their various states by 'job transfer'. If Abia State Government successfully gets away with that, what stops other state governments?

***N80,000 is about £312 and N65,000 is around £260: October 9.
