Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala

The outgoing PDP governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala thought he was 100% sure of winning the gubernatorial election and danced to the song Gongo Aso by Afro hip-hop star 9ice, at a campaign rally in Ogbomoso. It turned out to be Akala’s last public dance as a governor in a rally. He was defeated by the newly elected ACN Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

Before the election, Akala ‘laughed’ when Ibadan Elders’ Forum endorsed Ajimobi but later got his cronies to beg the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi III for forgiveness, a few days to the election. The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana was also told to forgive Akala.

Akala promised not to depose any monarch if re-elected. He became a desperado overnight after bullying and verbally abusing some traditional rulers or after intimidating them at the slightest opportunity. Specific monarchs were more or less used as Akala’s 'toothpicks' during his tenure.

In 2009, his daughter allegedly lost $56,000 (N9 million) to armed robbers on her way home from a party while the masses wallowed in abject poverty. In 2008, his daughter’s wedding reportedly gulped N100 million at the expense of the state.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission previously accused Akala of corruption through contract scams, at a total of N1 billion within 11 months. Akala is a former police officer who became a politician and milked Oyo State dry. Gongo ti so!
