MANUKA HONEY ‘PREVENTS’ SWINE FLU

Gum Disease
I’m not a health freak but I’m 'crazy' about Manuka honey aka Leptospermum. A late member of my extended family was a vegetarian and Manuka ‘addict’. A Chinese lady 'reintroduced' me to manuka honey in 2007 but I thought she was outrageous with her claims that it helped to cure her gum disease. All I knew was that she bought six jars at once and a jar was five times more expensive than the cheapest honey brand in the UK. A few days ago, a friend applied it to a naughty child’s wound and was surprised by the fast healing process without a scar. It was ‘incredible’ because in several ways manuka honey works like magic…
Swine Flu
Manuka honey is associated to the Maori tribe of New Zealand and it is also historically linked to southeast Australia. Health shop, Holland and Barrett advertised (in shop windows) that it prevents swine flu and nobody has yet challenged the claim. It does not cure swine flu but prevents it. Nevertheless, three people have died of swine flu in the UK so far.

MRSA
Manuka honey has medicinal properties unlike oridinary honey. According to a research at the University Of Wales College Of Medicine, it can be used in the treatment of diseases such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in leg ulcers. MRSA is also a notorious disease caught by patients in some British hospitals.
Hidradenitis suppurativa
Sarah Cabral claims that manuka honey treats Hidradenitis suppurativa and she is a sufferer. In Nigeria, Yoruba people call sufferers of the ailment ‘onikoko’ and it is appalling. They have spots as big as beans (or bigger) on their faces etc.
Antibacterial properties
It is advisable for you to see your GP before buying or using manuka honey especially if you are on prescription or medication. According to Honeymark products,

The antimicrobial activity of Manuka Honey has been observed in many studies around the world. It has been discovered that Manuka Honey is effective in destroying the following bacterial and fungal microorganisms:

* Escherichia coli
* Staphylococcus aureus
* Citrobacter freundii
* Proteus mirabilis
* Pseudomonas aeruginosa
* Salmonella typhimurium
* Streptococcus faecalis
* Streptococcus pyogenes

Cost: £50 or £5…According to Metro newspaper, the most expensive manuka honey in the UK is sold for £50 or £7 per spoon. The Daily Mail says it may cost £5 to £35 but I can reveal that at Holland and Barrett the cheapest is a small jar for £5.49 (5+) or £5.65 (5+) and it depends on the brand you want to buy. That is most probably the cheapest in the UK in terms of quality. The price depends on the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) or antibacterial strength and the size of honey jar e.g. 5+, 10+, 15+, 20+ and 25+.

Prostitutes Mourn Michael Jackson

The association of prostitutes is known as Commercial Sex Workers in Nigeria and their counter parts in Port Harcourt, Calabar, Uyo and Owerri are planning to mourn Michael Jackson in a fabulous way on July 4 at 9pm. According to Vanguard newspaper, they are going to dress in black and hold a service of songs for the King of Pop because his music attracts customers to them when they dance.
Some undergraduates work as part time prostitutes in order to pay their tuition fees and 'nobody' cares. Nigeria is more or less a country without student loans and social security benefits. The Nigerian Student Loan Board was never useful enough nor available to most students. According to E. J. Chuta, It gave 46 million Naira loans between 1973 – 1991. In 1993, it was replaced by the Nigerian Education Board and nothing has changed…

If the Federal Government gave social benefits there would be less money for politicians to loot from the treasury. The Central Bank Governor can compel major banks to give (interest free) student loans in order to curb this type of prostitution. Students can pay back when they start working like they do in several foreign countries.
While some people assume that prostitution is bad, the Mayoress of Central Netherlands town Almere, Annemarie Jorritsma suggested that prostitutes should accompany Dutch soldiers to war zones as a relief package in 2006. According to Metro,

Wim van den Burg, a spokesman for the Dutch soldier's trade union played down the idea, probably quite wisely. 'I don't think my wife would find it a good idea,' he said.

Dictator David Mark?

A lot of people did not know that the likeable Nigerian senate president, David Mark was the senatorial loose cannon until he dropped a clanger… He spoke on behalf of 87 senators and told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to undemocratically grant PDP senators automatic return tickets in 2011. He probably thought that the masses were nincompoops to make such a request.
That is what usually happens when retired military men find their way into politics. What a daft and annoying statement in this day and age. No wonder the lower house is more respected than the upper house. Mark does not need an automated ticket but automatic resignation… His lovely kids and beautiful wives need him at home. On your Mark …get set… Go!
Mark should find a solution to his big gob since he is not ready to buy a padlock. He should stop taking the masses for granted by making infuriating statements. According to Omoyele Sowore in 2007,

{mosgoogle}As Nigeria’s Minister for Communications in the 1980s, David Mark acquired a reputation for speaking in a gruff manner. His most notorious gaffe was a statement that telephones were not meant for poor Nigerians. The statement was in response to criticism of the scarcity of telephone lines as well as their high cost.

  2. Martin writes:@ Beekeeper of 31 years, can we buy manuka honey for about £4 like normal honey? if so, from where?What I have always worried about was the fact that some honey contain added sugar. How can you detect real honey? Is it only by the local beekeepers? Good to know…

  3. @beekeeper, it is good to support the local beekeepers. In the UK, you can buy a cheap jar of ‘ordinary’ honey for about £1.20 – £1.60 but it may not be fresh raw honey. Some people don’t care and just buy any type. 🙂 @HarizKing, don’t hesitate to add your opinion to the Manuka honey topic. How do you use Manuka honey in India? 😀 Nevertheless, your blog post titled ‘The Magical Remedies of Celery’ was useful to a lot of people: http://my.opera.com/Harizking/blog/2008/11/30/the-magical-remedies-of-celery

  4. beekeeper of 31 years writes:manuka honey is a massive commercial business ,it comes mainly from new Zealand ,so it also comes with a very high c02 rate when considering its a very green pursuit.@martin ,(only buy honey from a beekeeper not a sales rep nor supermarket would be my tip for the best quality ) the best honey in the world comes from the UK / Ireland, mostly from hobbyist beekeepers , beekeeping in the UK is not really a money spinning business ,which usually keeps the quality very high as its not the most desirable career choice for the greedy and the lazy .to find local beekeepers in your area check out this link http://www.britishbee.org.uk/local_associations_about_us.phpyou should also be able to find local honey in farmshops and food fairs

  5. Hamid writes:@ Beekeepers of acclaimed 3 decades and a year, I don’t agree with you on 2 ‘arrogant’ points:(1)That honey produced in New Zealand “comes with a very high CO2” as if the UK honey does not contain CO2 etc. That is a biased statement… Was the statement made to put buyers off New Zealand honey?(2)That “ beekeeping in the UK is not really a money spinning business ,which usually keeps the quality very high as its not the most desirable career choice for the greedy and the lazy .” Well, people who are not beekeepers in the UK are not necessarily lazy or greedy. It is a money spinning business otherwise Australia and New Zealand produced honey would not be on sale in the UK. In terms of quality, UK honey is of lower quality and 31 years of beekeeping should have taught you that. If they wish to continue to believe the lies you are feeding them with then good luck to them.
