British Education Secretary Michael Gove
In a specific place of interest; I find it ‘hard’ to resist Eton Mess on a hot day. It is my favourite ice cream which is whipped with distinctive taste and flavour. I love the ‘messes’ in my mouth often, don’t you?
A few days ago, the British education secretary Mr Michael Gove verbally ‘attacked’ some former Eton boys whom he called “Old Etonians” and accused them of being too many in British Prime Minister David Cameron’s circle. Later, the Labour Party later said the Etonians have lost touch with reality as politicians. In fact, Mr Gove walloped them with words!
Was he trying to disassociate himself from officials who attended private schools because it is obvious that Mr Gove did not attend such a posh school in England? 19 boys who went to Eton College later became Prime Ministers of Great Britain therefore I cannot really blame any parent who can afford to send their sons to Eton because the end justifies the means. Let us pile envy aside for the truth; if you could afford the tuition fees, would you not give your kids the best education too? Say the truth and let the devil be shamed! If the poor neglected children who joined gangs for better livelihood had the chance to go to Eton, would they be gangsters?
Is Gove’s Eton Mess anything to do with the controversial Channel 4 documentary series Benefit Street debate where the poor launched an attack on politicians because they don’t like being governed by millionaires who do not understand what it is like to be poor and unemployed in modern Britain since Mr Gove claimed that it is ridiculous to have too many Etonians?
However, it was not the fault of the Eton lads to be born into affluence. The current comparison between the rich and poor in the United Kingdom is like the Mabinuoris (Yoruba family name meaning ‘please do not envy my upper class lineage’), which is the opposite of Dr Sid feat Don Jazzy’s duet Surulere (which philosophically means that years of struggling with enormous patience leads to success).
It is easy to mock the Etonians for ‘sitting’ and ‘farting’ on top of us. Some Benefit Street debaters want people like them to be up there in a jiffy without knowing that it is easier said than done. Moreover, Benefit Street debaters were surprised when MP Mike Penning revealed that he was previously unemployed but today he is the Minister of State for the Disabled in the Department of Work and Pensions which could mean that nobody is beyond unemployment. How many lower class and middle class parents are ready to invest in their children and forgo material things so that they could meet the Etonians side by side, with the opportunity to do the same jobs later in life? Complaining about the Etonians may not change anything until people who can represent the ‘poor’ enter British politics.
Although I admire Mr Gove’s political bravery and ability to face the Etonians in office including the Prime Minister, I also like the way Mary Seacole was restored on the British Schools curriculum after a 35,000 petition via Operation Black Vote and ‘pressure’ from Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
