The Resignation of a Spin Doctor

Former Director of Communications Andy Coulson

It was probably the most 'shocking' British news yesterday! The Guardian (online) ran a live update on the resignation of Andy Coulson. For the broadcast media, it was series of Breaking News. Prime Minister David Cameron’s principal spin doctor had to resign because of the phone hacking allegations against him, while he was the editor of the News of the World.

The Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband said Coulson should have resigned earlier. Cameron was criticized for appointing Coulson as his Director of Communications in the first place because he was aware of the circumstances that led to Coulson’s resignation from the News of the World; which were allegations of phone hacking the royal family and celebrities.

Mr Coulson resigned as editor of the News of the World after Clive Goodman, the paper’s former royal editor, and Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator, were jailed for phone hacking.

Cameron showed his loyalty to Coulson by saying that Coulson was being “punished twice” for the same offence. “The police have reopened their inquiry and a string of court cases by alleged victims of phone hacking are in the pipeline”. Coulson claimed that he was deceived by a 'rogue reporter' while he was the editor of the weekly newspaper.

Andy Coulson's value to David Cameron was not only as a mere spin doctor, nor as just the link man to the powerful Murdoch Empire, but also as someone who connected him to those who read, rather than produced, tabloid newspapers.

Andy Coulson resigned from the News of the World in January 2007 and later became the Conservative Party’s Director of Communications. In 2010, he was 'elevated' to No. 10 Downing Street as the Prime Minister's Director of Communications. The Chief Spin Doctor resigned after eight months from his '£140,000-a-year' job.

Nigerian Side of Comedian Stephen K Amos

Some people may not know that British Comedian, Stephen K Amos has 'something' to do with Nigeria. It is very easy to assume that he is of Jamaican parentage but he is not. K actually stands for Kehinde and he has a twin sister. Kehinde is a Yoruba name. It is a name given to the second or junior twin and his parents are originally from Nigeria.

K Amos makes a lot of people laugh! Whenever he appears on the talk show The Wright Stuff with host Matthew Wright and other guests, you have to laugh because they set the audience off with rib cracking jokes. However, K Amos does not hide being gay but doesn't want to be labelled "the black gay comic". The Stephen K Amos Show is a BBC2 comedy.

Stephen K Amos said: "Obviously I'm thrilled – although now my mum will find out I'm a stand-up comedian. She thinks I drive a minicab."

… Comic World of Sylvain Chomet

French animator and comic writer Sylvain Chomet is in a class of his own. Belleville Rendez-vous was remarkably hilarious! The original version was released by the title Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003).

A lot of people, apart from kids, don’t watch much cartoon films. You don’t need to understand French at all to enjoy Chomet’s animated comic films because action speaks louder than words. Warning: Funny indeed!

There is a section that some people may not like in Belleville Rendez-vous. Let’s call it ‘expensive joke’ a la Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s ‘expensive sh*t’. Anyway, Chomet’s 2010 film, The Illusionist aka L’illusionniste is a love story.
