BUHARI, WHO WROTE WAI?

The War Against Indiscipline (WAI) policy was introduced by the Buhari-Idiagbon administration in Nigeria (1984) but was it a military or civilian policy because the original WAI manuscript was written by a civilian? The WAI initiator was once interviewed by NTA Newsline on his profession but WAI was not part of the interview. Journalists (not NTA) were privileged to see the original copy of WAI which was handwritten yet the man did not allow them to publish it because he was afraid of untimely death or assassination. Although Nigeria was no longer under the Buhari regime at the time he bluntly refused to hand over a copy of the manuscript because of some military officers who were still in service.
He claimed that the officers were his friends, they came to his house for a meeting and he entertained them. When they were leaving he gave them a copy of the original WAI manuscript with the hope that they would give it to the Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari who is now retired. It was obvious that he hoped to be compensated as a ghost-writer since military regimes have ‘never’ confessed of using civilian policies. Surprisingly, the officers refused to get in touch with him and he was deeply shocked to see his policy announced by the media and used by people in Nigeria. Until today Buhari and his deputy late Major-General Babatunde Idiagbon (rtd) were believed to be the initiators of WAI.
The real WAI initiator is an Igbo man of high integrity. Apart from the manuscript he also sent something to Buhari which I would prefer not to reveal. If it is found it could be used as evidence. Such a revelation could give him away and endanger his life at the moment. He accepted the fact that he was naive to have handed over his policy without a copyright and contract or agreement. When he was encouraged to fight for his rights he said he preferred the proverb that says: HE who fights and runs away, may live to fight another day. He had trust and confidence in his military friends who disappointed him and plagiarised WAI. Was Buhari aware of Mr. WAI all these years? Buhari should reveal how he came across WAI because Nigerians have the right to know the truth and the WAI originator should allow the media to publish the original manuscript. The original manuscript is worth seeing…
Former military Head of State cum Politician, Muhammadu Buhari contested the 2007 presidential election which was won by the current civilian president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He initially contested the 2003 presidential election and lost to former president Olusegun Obasanjo. Buhari and Idiagbon took over Nigeria in a military coup on December 31, 1983 and they were ousted by a coup led by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on August 27, 1985. WAI was not mentioned in Muhammadu Buhari’s coup speech of January 1, 1984. According to Dawodu:
The Buhari administration identified indiscipline as the bane of the nation's ills and therefore decided to fight it in all its ramifications. Hence the pre-occupation of the regime was the launching of the different phases of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) which has become a household word in may Nigerian homes. There were five phases of WAI, namely:-
a. Queuing (March 20, 1984)
b. Work Ethics (May 1, 1984)
c. Nationalism and Patriotism (August 21, 1984)
d. Anti-Corruption and Economic Sabotage (May 14, 1985)
e. Environmental Sanitation (July 29, 1985).

Love Letters…

After reading Victor Ehikhamenor’s Love Letters I had to agree that people are hardly writing love letters nowadays because it is easier to chat, email and send text messages. Some lovers prefer to break-up affairs by texts in order to avoid confrontation and a Saudi Arabian man divorced his wife by a text message… Outrageous lovers make love on moblie phones so you can imagine what lovers do on webcams. Modern lovers have thrown caution to the wind. If possible they would kiss or do more like Darey Art Alade on roof tops et al. There are several free E-cards on-line for loved ones that people literally ‘forget’ to write love letters and send real cards. The time it takes to buy stamps and envelopes does put people off writing love letters. Some post office queues are as long as marathon tracks and time consuming too. Technologies have made communication faster and easier.
Several years ago, I received a 40 page love letter every fortnight for over three months by an anonymous writer in Nigeria. I was so ashamed that the only person I could discuss it with was my dad’s personal assistant Mr. H. At first it was funny but when it continued it made me sad. The writer came across like a psychopath… Only a madman would write a 40 page letter, would you? I came to the conclusion that it was a case of mistaken identity because the dates he gave in the letters were of someone a decade older than me but that was how psychopaths behaved. He was probably looking for a lost love with similar names. The letters were not ‘raw’ but sometimes romantic and old fashioned.

Can you write a love letter? It is the easiest type of letter to write because it comes straight from the heart… I think a love poem is easier because it could be more romantic or passionate. You can write a love letter by starting with a salutation such as Hi Honey, Hello Darling or Dear Sweetheart… Come on; show how much you care by writing a love letter today. Don’t email it but post it.

  1. Some people don’t believe in writing love letters. They believe that action can speak louder than words. So, what do you want action or words? 🙂
